Limited or No Credit

Having good credit is crucial because you will have access to more credit when you need it. If you possess good credit, it can help you finance a car, rent an apartment, get a home mortgage, set up utility accounts, and obtain employment. If you plan on purchasing a car or living in your own house one day, obtaining and maintaining good credit is an important part of that.

If you have little or no credit, contrary to popular belief, there is a way for you to build up your credit. When you first start out, it may seem difficult to establish your credit history. By opening a checking or savings account, you’ll be able to pay your bills. This is particularly important for landlords who expect to receive rent checks each month. If you make regular and consistent payments on a co-signed loan, creditors will be able to see you are a responsible credit consumer. After six months to a year, you may be able to apply for credit on your own.

Quite possibly the best way to build good credit is by opening a secured credit card. Secured credit cards require that you maintain a certain amount in your account (usually between 100-200 percent of the amount of credit desired), and by maintaining this amount and making payments in full and on time, you will be well on your way to establishing credit in your name.
